To Brittany!

We left Padstow and anchored in St. Ives. Then we sailed to the Isles of Scilly. On the way to Scilly we saw Nessie! Hard to tell in the haze though...😉 After a night at the largest island of Scilly we crossed the English Channel and after 24h of sailing (and motoring) we arrived, quite tired, at the northwest coast of France and a small port at L'aber Wrac'h in Landéda, Brittany. The most dramatic thing that happened at the crossing was the mysterious stationary lights that appeared next to our boat in the dark of night. However, it “just” turned out to be the anchor lanterns from anchored ships lying between the traffic separation zones. Not so far from the coast of France, a lot of solo sailors also suddenly appeared in sailboats whose sails swayed slowly in the non-existent wind. It was a strange experience to zig-zag between all the boats in the dark... After a while we found out via the VHF that it was a French regatta where all the participants had ended up in the doldrums and now had to lie still and wait for the wind. Early in the morning we were greeted by dolphins again and now we could film them! It was not the same species as in the North Sea, but we think these are Common Dolphins. They seemed to make high jumps with big splashes as they slowly approached our boat. We suspect it was a way to stun fish they were hunting? Or maybe it was just dolphins who wanted to show off. Once at our boat they started playing and chasing at the bow.
Because we got really dense fog that makes further sailing impossible, we remain at L'aber Wrac'h. It is a nice community with beautiful houses with small, fun details and large lush gardens. Of course, we have visited a bakery in the slightly larger village of Landéda and bought some good French cheeses. Here you actually walk with the baguette under your arm - or possibly sticking it out of your backpack/handbag(!) A good French breakfast on the boat with some rosé wine wasn't so bad!
When the weather clears, we will head south along the French coast.

Vi lämnade Padstow och ankrade först i St. Ives och därefter seglade vi till Isles of Scilly. På vägen till Scilly såg vi Nessie! Svårt dock att avgöra i diset...😉 Efter en natt vid den största ön vid Scilly korsade vi engelska kanalen och efter ett dygns segling (och motorkörande) kom vi, ganska trötta, fram till Frankrikes nordvästra kust och en liten hamn vid L’aber Wrac’h i Landéda, Bretagne. Det mest dramatiska som hände vid överfarten var de mystiska stillastående ljusen som dök upp bredvid vår båt i nattens mörker. Det visade sig dock ”bara” vara ankarlanternorna från ankrade fartyg som låg mellan trafiksepareringszonerna. Inte så långt från Frankrikes kust dök också plötsligt en massa soloseglare upp i segelbåtar vars segel vajade sakta i den obefintliga vinden. En märklig upplevelse att sick-sacka sig mellan alla båtar i mörkret… Efter ett tag fick vi via VHF:en veta att det rörde sig om en fransk regatta där alla deltagare hamnat i stiltje och nu vackert fick ligga och vänta på vinden. Tidigt på morgonen fick vi påhälsning av delfiner igen och nu kunde vi filma dem! Det var inte samma art som i Nordsjön utan dessa tror vi är ”vanliga” delfiner (Common Dolphin) De verkade göra höga hopp med stora plask när de sakta närmade sig vår båt. Vi misstänker att det var ett sätt att bedöva fisk som de jagade? Eller så var det bara delfiner som ville visa sig på styva linan. Väl framme vid vår båt började de leka och jaga vid fören.

Eftersom vi fått en riktigt tät dimma som omöjliggör vidare segling, ligger vi kvar vid L’aber Wrac’h. Det är ett trevligt samhälle med vackra hus med små, roliga detaljer och stora lummiga trädgårdar. Vi har såklart besökt ett bageri i den lite större byn Landéda och inhandlat lite goda franska ostar. Här går man faktiskt med baguetten under armen -eller möjligen uppstickandes ur ryggsäcken/handväskan(!) En god fransk frukost i båten med lite rosévin var inte så dumt!
När vädret klarnat beger vi oss söderut längs den franska kusten.
