San Sebastián and Bilbao

San Sebastián was our next stop after sailing on the hottest day we've experienced during our sailing so far. The city welcomes its guests from the sea with a statue of Christ looking out towards the city from Mount Urgul. Incidentally, the name Urgul sounds like it comes from a Tolkien saga... The statue is not as magnificent as the one in Rio de Janeiro, but it was still visible from afar. Once there, we had to lie on a buoy outside the harbor, right in front of the beach that borders the city. Unfortunately, it was both expensive and terribly bumpy as the waves came in from the sea but the boat taxi that takes the boaters into town was free and ran 24/7. It was just a matter of calling it out on the VHF radio. We took a full day in San Sebastián and strolled around the part called Parte Vieja (Old Town) and looked at all the little narrow streets and old houses and also got to see some street performance. The river that runs through the city is called Urumea (Tolkien again?) and several bridges connect the different districts. Some were really flashily decorated. We also took the opportunity to eat fantastically good Pintxo (Basque version of tapas) and had a swim from the boat. Unfortunately, we never had time to try the Basque cheesecake, which is supposed to be particularly good here in San Sebastián. We needed to get on towards Bilbao, where we would get a long-awaited visit from son and girlfriend.

Since it is not possible, in any easy way, to get to the port of Bilbao by sailing boat, we went at a port closer to the mouth of the river Nervión at the town of Getxo. We stayed here for over a week and were delighted that David and Cajsa would visit us. The same day we arrived at Getxo, Malin managed to slip on a stone staircase down to the water where the dinghy was moored. There were nasty scrapes from the sharp oysters that grew on the edges but luckily it was a superficial wound that healed after a couple of days. During the week, we and our guests accomplished a couple of visits to the provincial capital of Bilbao, which is beautifully situated surrounded by hills and divided by the Nervión, which runs through the city. We visited the Guggenheim Museum, marveled at the building and the exhibition by Yayoi Kusama. We walked in the old districts and made a short visit to the cultural center Azkuna Zentroa. In addition, we got to follow a rowing competition (typical Biscay traditional Trainera regatta) up close.

Opposite the port of Getxo, where Anastacia was, is the village of Santurzi. The easiest way to get there is via the Biscay Bridge, which is now classified as a world heritage site. The bridge is actually a suspension ferry with a gondola that hangs under the bridge span itself. A smart way to be able to transport both people and cars without disturbing boat traffic! In Santurzi there was a 10-day festival dedicated to the Holy Virgin of Carmen (actually the Virgin Mary) who is considered the patron saint of sailors. The highlight was Sunday, July 16, when a procession, under solemn forms, brought the statue of the Virgin to the harbor and via boat, out to sea and back again. Just to be safe, we made sure that Anastacia got her share of the protection and now a couple of symbolic keys hang at the "captain's place" that we bought from the Catholic nuns during the festivities. They said it would bring good luck on our journey... The evening ended with a thunderous firework display.

When the young couple left us for further adventures in, among other places, Bordeaux, I (Malin) and Christer took the opportunity to take a long walk and pick up a package that was stuck in the FedEx warehouse instead of being driven to the port of Getxo, as planned. The package contained equipment to take algae samples in a research project carried out by The International SeaKeepers Society. We hope to tell you more about this another time.

San Sebastián blev vår nästa anhalt efter en segling i den dittills varmaste dagen vi upplevt under vår seglats. Staden välkomnar sina gäster från havet med en Kristusstaty som tittar ut mot staden från berget Urgul. Namnet Urgul låter för övrigt som kommen från en Tolkiensaga... Statyn är inte så magnifik som den i Rio de Janeiro men den syntes ändå från långt håll. Väl framme fick vi ligga på boj utanför hamnen, precis framför badstranden som kantar staden. Tyvärr var det både dyrt och förfärligt guppigt då vågorna letade sig in från havet men båttaxin som tar båtfolket in till staden var gratis och körde 24/7. Det var bara att ropa upp den på VHF-radion. Vi tog en heldag i San Sebastián och strosade runt i den del som kallas Parte Vieja (gamla staden) och tittade på alla små, smala gränder och fick också se lite gatuuppträdande. Floden som rinner genom staden heter Urumea (Tolkien igen?) och flera broar förbinder de olika stadsdelarna. Vissa var riktigt pråligt utsmyckade. Vi passade också på att äta fantastiskt god Pintxo (Baskiska varianten av tapas) och badade från båten. Tyvärr hann vi aldrig prova den baskiska ostkakan som skall vara speciellt god här i San Sebastián. Vi behövde komma vidare mot Bilbao där vi skulle få efterlängtat besök av son med flickvän.

Eftersom det inte, på något enkelt sätt, går att komma till hamnen i Bilbao med segelbåt så kunde vi ligga vid en hamn närmare flodmynningen till floden Nervión vid staden Getxo. Här stannade vi i över en vecka och gladdes åt att David och Cajsa skulle besöka oss. Samma dag som vi kom till Getxo lyckades Malin halka på en stentrappa ner till vattnet där gummibåten var förtöjd. Det blev otäcka skrapsår från de vassa ostronen som växte på kanterna men som tur var, var det ytliga sår som läkte efter ett par dagar. Under veckan hann vi och våra gäster med ett par besök till provinshuvudstaden Bilbao som ligger vackert beläget omgärdat av kullar och delas av Nervión som rinner genom staden. Vi besökte Guggenheimmuseet, förundrades över byggnaden och utställningen av Yayoi Kusama. Vi promenerade i de gamla stadsdelarna och gjorde ett kort besök på kulturcentret Azkuna Zentroa. Dessutom fick vi på nära håll följa en roddtävling (traditionell Trainera regatta, typisk för Biscaya).

Mittemot hamnen i Getxo, där Anastacia låg, ligger byn Santurzi. Enklast att ta sig dit är via Biscayabron som numera är klassad som världsarv. Bron är egentligen en hängfärja med en gondol som hänger under själva brospannet. Ett smart sätt att kunna transportera både människor och bilar utan att störa båttrafiken! I Santurzi pågick en 10-dagars festival vigd åt den heliga jungfrun av Carmen (egentligen jungfru Maria) som anses vara sjöfararnas beskyddare. Höjdpunkten var söndagen den 16 juli då en procession, under högtidliga former, förde jungfrustatyn till hamnen och via båt, ut till havet och tillbaks igen. Vi såg för säkerhets skull till att Anastacia fick sin del av beskyddandet och numera hänger ett par symboliska nycklar vid ”captains place” som vi köpte av de katolska nunnorna under festligheterna. De bedyrade att det skulle bringa lycka på vår färd… Kvällen avslutades med ett hejdundrande fyrverkeri.

När det unga paret lämnat oss för vidare äventyr i bl a Bordeaux passade jag (Malin) och Christer på att ta en lååång promenad och hämta ut ett paket som fastnat på FedEx lager istället för att köras till hamnen i Getxo, som planerat. Paketet innehöll utrustning för att ta algprover i ett forskningsprojekt som genomförs av The International SeaKeepers Society. Vi hoppas kunna berätta mer om detta en annan gång.
